OUR TUESDAY MOUNTAIN BIKING TRADITION

Traditionally, Tuesdays, in the summer, are set aside for riding with Tim.  It's the only day of the week he has off work...so we maintain a standing date for a weekly ride.  Our rides, this summer, weren't very long...but what we lacked in miles we more than made up for with adventure, mud, rain, rocks, and exploration!

Tim and I set out for six Tuesday mountain bike rides over the course of the last few months...five in Michaux State Forest and one trip to the Parkway Trail System in Harrisburg.  Unlike the summer of 2016, we weren't plagued with mechanical issues (we only experienced two flats this summer) and, unlike the summer of 2017, we saw very little wildlife (with the exception of the typical squirrels and deer).  As in years past...the more the merrier!  Tim's buddy, Adam, joined us for our ride on the Parkway Trails. Ben (a former student of mine and now co-worker at Gung Ho Bikes), along with Matt and Brent, each joined us for a ride in Michaux...adding to the dynamics, conversation, adventure, and fun.

TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2018 -- PARKWAY TRAIL SYSTEM

This was the only Tuesday that Tim and I did not go to Michaux.  He had never ridden the Parkway Trails in Harrisburg...so we made that our destination for our second ride of the summer.  Tim took this pic of me coming out of the trees and under the power lines.  Super cool! -- June 26, 2018

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2018 -- MICHAUX STATE FOREST

Tuesday, July 31, was probably the most tropical ride of the year...and the only ride that Matt was able to join us on. Great to have you with us, Red Beard.  Hope we can connect more next summer.  This pic was taken at the end of my favorite rock  garden  near the top of Slate Road.  Left to right:  Tim Sindlinger, Dave Raymond, Matt Linnane.  -- July 31, 2018

On July 31, normal stream crossings were as swollen as I've ever seen them.  Not so bad that we couldn't ride it, though! (Maybe this is why I recently needed to put a new bottom bracket in my bike.) Matt Linnane in Michaux State Forest. -- July 31, 2018

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2018 -- MICHAUX STATE FOREST

Tuesday, August 7, was a day that Tim and I had decided to revisit a section of the forest that we hadn't ridden in over 10 years.  The week before, I had, from the corner of my eye, noticed ATV trail #33 which descends off of Slate Road.  I remembered it being pretty difficult...and it was.  The huge pay off was getting to ride off of Bear Knob...a great section of the forest...and one that I just don't visit nearly enough. I mountain biked other places this summer besides my Tuesday rides with Tim...but these weekly excursions are something I really look forward to.  Tim and I have been riding together for almost 20 years now and I love that we've been able to maintain our friendship through this weekly summertime tradition.  With the school year now about to begin, I'm hoping (and pretty positive) that Tim and I (along with everyone else in our mountain biking circle) will be able to connect over the next few months.  Regardless, come next summer, I'm sure the two of us will be out mountain biking the first Tuesday we have off.

Each ride at Michaux this summer ended with a trip to Mountain Creek Campground for ice cream.  For some reason I was on a sherbet kick all summer long.  My typical order...Two scoops, in a dish, with a sugar cone on top like a hat! -- August 14, 2018

IT IS BEAUTIFUL BACK HERE

I could hear Ben's voice behind me as I was navigating down one of my favorite trails in Michaux State Forest.  Tim had a flat and we needed to stop.  Of all the places in the forest where Tim could possibly had flatted...he chose one of the most beautiful.  The trail isn't identified on the official map of the forest and I'm not sure if it has an official name...but it's an absolute jewel of a trail to ride.  It's been nearly two years (and one back surgery) ago since I'd last been on it...and I was loving every second of it!  After hearing Ben call out, I walked my bike back to the sight of Tim and Ben on top of a huge boulder...Tim's bike turned upside-down...working to fix Tim's flat.  I had never paused here...and why would I?  The trail, in this particular section of the forest skirts the boundary of Tumbling Run Game Preserve, weaves in and out of tall pines, flows past an endless sea of green ferns, and rolls over...and around...boulders the size of my pick up truck...it's literally "mountain biking heaven!"   Realizing that they had the tire situation under control I just stood there and gawked at my surroundings.  I can remember saying out loud..."It's beautiful back here!"

This was Ben's first ride with us.  He's a former student of mine who now works at Gung Ho Bikes.  I've been helping out in the shop this summer and it's been really fun to work along side of him.   When I realized that we both had Tuesday off, and that we were both planning on mountain biking, I invited him to join Tim and I on our ride in Michaux.  I was under strict orders from Jay (our boss at Gung Ho) to make sure that Ben was "puking and crying and taught a good lesson about old men and cycling."  I was to bring him back to the shop hurting...but not so much that he couldn't work!  Our ride was front loaded with climbing and included Tom's Run, Dynamite Shack, a stop at the ruins of Camp Michaux (a WWII Interrogation Camp), a ton of super fun single track, and ultimately ended with an amazing ride on top of Grave Ridge...one of the most technical rides in the forest.  I probably wasn't as hard on Ben as Jay would have liked me to have been...but I wanted him to want to ride with us again!

Everything about our ride on Tuesday was amazing...the crystal blue skies, the breeze was cool, dry, with the scent of pine trees, and the Rhododendron was in full bloom.  It was super cool to watch Ben ride over boulders that I choose to ride around and see Tim navigate log build-ups that continue to make me nervous since my surgeries.  As for me...I have this "risk/reward" thing going on:  I don't take as many risks as I use to...and the reward is that I get to keep mountain biking.  After all...it's really beautiful back there.

A PERFECT DAY

The "Month of Gray" (formerly known here in south central Pennsylvania as the month of May) has finally come and gone.  The end of yet another successful school year has ushered in my unofficial start of summer, and along with it, a string of nice weather.  Actually, we've had some amazingly nice weather...low humidity, blue skies, and high temps around 80 degrees.  I couldn't have asked for conditions to be any more perfect for my first summer ride in Michaux State Forest.

A lot of thought was put into deciding where, in Michaux, Tim and I would ride this week.  We ultimately decided that the best way to initiate ourselves into the summer mountain biking season was to make the climb up the my favorite vista and soak in the beauty of the forest below.  From there, Tim and I just began to make things up as we went.  We explored parts of Buck Ridge Trail, pedaled a little bit of fire road, and zipped through some super cool single track that carved it's way through the forest landscape.  Tim and I wrapped up our day with a descent down the ridge and a stream crossing through Tom's Run.  A day of beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, good company, a whole lof of Vitamin N...yep, our first summer ride proved to be just about perfect in so many ways.

My summer kicked off with a trip to Mesa, Arizona to see my nieces and my nephew.  We managed to get out one evening for pizza and ice cream.  Left to right:  Isaac Raymond, Sophie Raymond, Jackie Raymond, & Uncle Dave.   -- June 9, 2018
